Moving House Checklist - Make Your Move Easier

Are you moving home, or planning to move? It's known as one of life's most stressful experiences, but it doesn't have to be! Check out our moving house checklist that can help make your move hassle-free.

1 to 3 months before moving

Arrange a vehicle - When arranging a van for your move, make sure to pick a reputable company with plenty of positive reviews so they don't let you down on moving day.

The company should be able to advise you if you're not sure what size van to choose, but always go for the bigger option as it will mean less trips between the two properties.

Size up - Find out the measurements of your new property, so you know which furniture you can and can't keep. This is especially important if you're downsizing!

Declutter - After finding out how much space you'll have in your new home, we recommend that you start sorting through your belongings as soon as possible. Declutter room-by-room, starting with the most difficult first (e.g. the garage or loft), and finish with the least cluttered room.

1 or 2 weeks before

Pack efficiently - This is one of the most important parts of your move, as packing efficiently could save you a lot of time and hassle in the long run. A good way of tackling this is by grouping your belongings into three categories - non-essential items (green), mid-essential items (yellow) and everyday items (red).

You could label boxes with appropriately-coloured stickers so that when it comes to unpacking, you know where to find all of your necessities and won't have to rummage through everything.

Redirect your post - If you're not sure who's moving into your existing property, you might want to consider using Royal Mail's Postal Redirection Service. This is a great safety net if you haven't told utility companies, insurance firms etc. that you're moving just yet.

Remove fittings and fixtures - Now is the time to start bringing down fittings and fixtures that you want to take with you. Whether it's a shelf unit or a lamp, it's worth getting these bulk items ready for transportation.

Moving day

Do a final check of your existing home - We suggest putting aside at least 20 minutes for this. Give your property one final sweep, checking inside any built-in wardrobes, cupboards, drawers etc. to make sure you haven't left anything behind. It'll be worth it!

Move on Saturday morning - If you're someone who normally works Monday to Friday and haven't booked any time off for your house move, then Saturday morning is definitely the best time for you to do it.

You'll feel less stressed knowing that you have the whole Sunday to get your new property in order, and are more likely to get a helping hand from friends and family too.

Put furniture in the new property first - Just like packing, efficient unpacking can save you a lot of bother. It's best putting your furniture in place exactly where you want it, and then bringing in your remaining storage boxes.
