Five Quick & Easy Home Improvements You Can Make During Lockdown

During the current coronavirus pandemic, our homes have become a more important part of our lives than ever before.

Although there's plenty we'll happily wave goodbye to when the current crisis is over, many have enjoyed the opportunity to spend some more time and effort on their homes and gardens.

Being indoors has given us time to reflect on things we really love about our homes and decor, and shone a new light on some areas that could do with a fresh look.

Now we're in the latest national lockdown, many are once again looking at their properties and thinking of ways to make them look a little different.

Whether you have a home with multiple rooms and a garden, or a smaller apartment with limited outdoor space, we've put together our five top quick and easy home improvement tips to brighten up your living space this winter.

1. Old is the new 'new' - It can be a big commitment to purchase new furniture, and with delayed delivery times and more reliance on making sure the measurements are correct yourself, why not upcycle what you already have? Whether that's giving your trusty wooden bedside table or bookcase a lick of fresh paint, adding new handles to your existing wardrobes or getting handy with some upholstery on your favourite chair, it's easy to make big changes for a small amount of money.

2. Add some colour - Sales for paint surged during the first lockdown back in March. Although you may have done your fair share of painting back then, are there any other areas that could do with a lick of colour? Rooms that are heavily used such as living rooms, playrooms or bathrooms can often show signs of wear and tear more easily, so now could be the perfect time for a little touch up. If you've been putting off that big tiling job, look at some more cost effective alternatives such as removable vinyl - much cheaper and definitely easier than learning how to tile all by yourself! And if you've always been tempted to learn how to wallpaper, get that pasting table out now.

3. Update your accessories - Changing your soft furnishings can create a huge difference in your home - choosing some fresh bedding with a bold pattern can add another tone into your bedroom palette, and adding cushions with texture and embellishments adds depth to a plain couch. Don't just stick to fabrics either - if you've got an empty wall, consider creating a gallery wall with new prints and frames, or take advantage of free photo printing apps to get some new family snaps on display.

4. Brighten up your outside space - Although the current weather means that a large scale revamp of your garden or patio is out of the question, that doesn't mean that you can't add some colour and a bit of interest with some simple changes. If your space permits, coloured gravels, aggregates and cobbles can create a focal point and add some interest, and some new pots outside your front door or on a balcony could brighten up those hardy winter plants.

5. Declutter, declutter, declutter - This one is free and can make the biggest difference to your home! Whilst many took advantage during the first lockdown to go through their wardrobes and cupboards, things can always mount up and it might be time to get rid of those bits you decided to keep last year. So pull everything out and consider if it could go to a better home, whether that's to a charity shop, an animal shelter or a friend. You could even sell it online to make a few extra pennies!
